FC 27 Future Stars Live Upgrades Explained: Every Threshold, Which Cards Can Actually Upgrade, and When They Land

The start and goal thresholds, the 87 OVR cap, all 15 Team 1 cards checked one by one, the easier MLS and Liga MX targets, and the 3 February 2027 upgrade date

FC 27 Future Stars Explained graphic with two Páez player cards on a dark slate background with gold accents

By Parth Raj, WhatsGaming · Last updated · Thresholds, ratings and dates below are taken from FIFPlay, fifauteam, FUT.GG and Altchar, linked where they're used. EA hasn't published a tracking end date yet.

Vicky López is a 90. Rio Ngumoha is an 89.

And neither of them can gain a single overall point from starts. Not one. Meanwhile an 85-rated Fulham midfielder could finish the promo two points higher than his card says today.

The straight answer: FC 27 Future Stars live upgrades are tracked from 9 October 2026 using domestic league matches only. Starts give up to +2 OVR (capped at 87), and goals plus assists (or clean sheets for defenders and keepers) give a PlayStyle+ and then a 5-star Weak Foot. Players in the NWSL, MLS, Liga MX and Liga Profesional get lower thresholds. The upgrades themselves are reported to land on 3 February 2027.

Every other explainer stops at the threshold table. This one goes card by card through Team 1 and tells you which Future Stars can actually move, and which ones are already maxed on OVR before a ball is kicked.

TRACKING STARTED

9 Oct

Domestic league games only. Nothing before Friday 9 October counts.

OVR CAP FROM STARTS

87

+1 to a max of 86, then +1 to a max of 87. Cards at 87+ gain nothing.

UPGRADES LAND

3 Feb

Reported for 3 February 2027. No tracking end date published yet.

How do FC 27 Future Stars live upgrades work?

Every Future Stars item has four upgrade milestones, and each one can only be earned once. Two are tied to league starts and raise the overall rating. The other two are tied to goals plus assists (for attackers and midfielders) or clean sheets (for defenders and goalkeepers), and add a PlayStyle+ and a 5-star Weak Foot.

Here are the full thresholds, as published in FIFPlay's Future Stars hub and fifauteam's FC 27 Future Stars page:

FC 27 Future Stars upgrade thresholds — each milestone can be earned once, domestic league matches only
UpgradeMost leaguesNWSL, MLS, Liga MX, LPF
+1 OVR (max 86)4 starts2 starts
+1 OVR (max 87)8 starts3 starts
PlayStyle+ (one max)7 goals + assists (ATT/MID) or 4 clean sheets (DEF/GK)2 goals + assists or 2 clean sheets
5-star Weak Foot10 goals + assists (ATT/MID) or 7 clean sheets (DEF/GK)4 goals + assists or 3 clean sheets

So the absolute ceiling for any Future Stars card is up to 87 OVR, one new PlayStyle+, and 5-star Weak Foot. That's the whole menu.

The small print that actually decides your upgrades

Four rules matter more than the table:

  1. Domestic league only. FIFPlay confirms cup, continental and international matches don't count. A worldie in the Champions League is worth zero upgrade progress.
  2. It's starts, not appearances. Both OVR milestones are written as starts. A 20-minute cameo off the bench doesn't appear to count towards them.
  3. Clean sheets need the player on the pitch. FIFPlay and fifauteam both note a clean sheet only counts if that player featured in the match. Your keeper doesn't earn one sat on the bench.
  4. Caps are hard caps. Starts can never push a card above 87. If the card is already at or above the cap for a milestone, that milestone gives it nothing.

KEY TAKEAWAY

These are slow, season-long upgrades built on league form. Think months, not match days.

When do Future Stars upgrades get applied in FC 27?

The upgrades are reported to be applied on 3 February 2027. Tracking began on 9 October 2026, so you're holding these cards for close to four months before any boost turns up on your card. That 3 February date is reported by FIFPlay, fifauteam and Altchar's Team 1 launch report. Plenty of explainers miss it completely.

What nobody has published yet is the tracking end date. We know when counting starts and when the upgrades land. We don't know the exact cut-off for stats in between. Until EA says otherwise, assume every league start from now until late January matters, and don't treat any card as "finished" early.

  • Fri 9 October 2026

Tracking starts. Future Stars Team 1 goes live at 6 PM BST, and from here every domestic league start, goal, assist and clean sheet counts.

  • 9 – 16 October

The Future Stars Academy Evolution releases in stages on 9, 11, 13 and 16 October. It runs on your matches, not real-life form.

  • Around 16 October

Future Stars Team 2 is expected. Its cards follow the same thresholds, and I'll add them to the table below when they drop.

  • Late January 2027 (unconfirmed)

No tracking end date has been published. Assume every league start up to the upgrade date matters.

  • Wed 3 February 2027

The upgrades are reported to be applied to every eligible Future Stars card.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Progress builds now, the payout comes in February. Don't expect your card to change mid-season.

Which FC 27 Future Stars Team 1 cards can actually upgrade?

Only the eight Team 1 cards rated 85 or 86 can gain overall from starts. The seven rated 87 and above are already at or past the cap, so their only live upgrades left are the PlayStyle+ and 5-star Weak Foot.

I've mapped every Team 1 card against the rules. Ratings and positions are from FIFPlay's Team 1 list, and the upgrade bucket follows the card's listed position, not where the player lines up in real life. For the full squad and how the promo launched, see our FC 27 Future Stars Team 1 guide.

The 85s: the most to gain

These five can go 85 → 86 → 87. In most leagues that's 4 starts for the first point and 8 for the second.

Julian Hall is the standout. As an MLS striker he only needs 2 starts for 86, 3 starts for 87, 2 goals plus assists for a PlayStyle+ and 4 for 5-star Weak Foot. That's the lowest bar in the whole of Team 1, and the clearest path to a fully maxed card. Josh King is the Premier League shout. A CAM card means his goals and assists all count, and he's on the most-leagues thresholds like everyone in England.

Then there's Robin Risser. A goalkeeper who hits 7 clean sheets gets 5-star Weak Foot. Lovely for goal kicks, I suppose. If his card already has it, he'd get 5-star Skill Moves instead, which is even funnier on a keeper.

The 86s: one point, and it's the hard one

Here's the trap. The first starts milestone caps at 86, and these three are already 86. So 4 starts does nothing for them. Only the 8-start milestone moves Tom Bischof, Lewis Hall and Lily Yohannes to 87.

Same total ceiling as the 85s, half the overall gain.

87 and above: PlayStyle+ and Weak Foot only

Vicky López, Ngumoha, Godts, Lewis-Skelly, Bonny, Mora and Ramón are already at or over 87. Starts can't touch them that doesn't make them bad picks, It just means their live upgrades are purely about the extras. FUT.GG's database lists López's Future Stars card at 90, up from an 84 gold, so EA has already front-loaded the boost on cards like hers. For Ngumoha at 89, 7 league goals plus assists means a PlayStyle+, and 10 means 5-star Weak Foot.

Gilberto Mora is the interesting one in this group. Liga MX is on the easier thresholds, so he needs just 2 goals plus assists for a PlayStyle+ and 4 for 5-star Weak Foot. No OVR gain, but the quickest route to the extras of any 87+ card.

KEY TAKEAWAY

If you want overall rating growth, buy an 85. If you want the best card on day one, buy an 89 or 90 and treat the extras as a bonus.

Does Myles Lewis-Skelly count as a defender or a midfielder?

He counts as a defender, because his Future Stars card is listed at CDM. CDM sits in the clean-sheet bucket alongside GK, RB, LB and CB. Attackers and midfielders are CM, CAM, LW, LM, RW, RM and ST.

That's the bit that catches people out. The upgrade bucket follows the card's listed position, not where Arsenal play him on a Saturday. Lewis-Skelly's gold card was a left-back, his Future Stars item is a CDM, and either way his upgrade route is 4 clean sheets for a PlayStyle+ and 7 for 5-star Weak Foot, with the clean sheet only counting if he actually featured.

The same logic covers Laura Blindkilde Brown, also a CDM card. Goals from her won't move her upgrade bar. Clean sheets will.

Which leagues get easier Future Stars upgrade thresholds?

The NWSL, MLS, Liga MX and Liga Profesional (LPF) get lower thresholds, and EA hasn't officially explained why. The most likely reason is the calendar: those leagues are closer to the end of their seasons in October, so there are fewer league games left to hit a target. That's the theory FUT.GG's writer floated too, and the numbers fit it.

For Team 1, it affects two cards: Julian Hall (MLS) and Gilberto Mora (Liga MX). Both have targets that a starter in form could realistically hit in a handful of games.

One thing I couldn't confirm anywhere: whether MLS or Liga MX playoff games count as "domestic league" matches. None of the published rules say either way. If you're buying Julian Hall or Mora specifically for the upgrades, keep an eye on their regular-season starts and don't bank on playoff games until EA clarifies.

What happens if a Future Star already has 5-star Weak Foot or a PlayStyle+?

You don't lose the upgrade. It converts. A card that already has 5-star Weak Foot gets 5-star Skill Moves instead. A card that already has a PlayStyle+ gets an extra base PlayStyle instead of a second PlayStyle+, because each item is limited to one PlayStyle+ from this system.

Both conversions are confirmed by fifauteam and FIFPlay. So before you write off a card's final milestone, check its current Weak Foot. On the right winger, a 5-star Skill Moves conversion might be worth more than the Weak Foot would've been.

Do Future Stars SBC cards and the Academy Evolution get live upgrades?

SBC Future Stars items are Future Stars items, so the published rules apply to them, and none of the sources list an exception. The headline Player SBC so far is Carlos Espí, an 85-rated ST, per FIFPlay. As an 85, he sits in the same "+2 to 87" bracket as the best Team 1 upgrade candidates. I priced his SBC against his tradeable card in the best FC 27 SBCs right now.

The Future Stars Academy Evolution is a different thing. It's an Evolution chain for ST or CAM players born on or after 9 October 2003, released in stages across 9, 11, 13 and 16 October. Destructoid's Academy Evo breakdown says it's free to start and each level asks for one match with the evolving player. FIFPlay previews it finishing around 85 OVR.

FC 27 Future Stars Academy Evolution requirements and levels in Ultimate TeamFC 27 Future Stars Academy Evolution

Academy upgrades come from you playing games. Live upgrades come from the real player's league form. Don't mix the two up when you're deciding what to keep.

My verdict on FC 27 Future Stars live upgrades: buy for now, not for February

Buy for how the card plays today, and treat the upgrades as a February bonus. The boost is reported for 3 February 2027, the tracking end date isn't public, and nothing about a player's league form is certain over four months. Injuries, rotation and a loan move can all stall a card.

If upgrade value is the deciding factor, here's my order:

  1. Julian Hall. Easiest thresholds in Team 1 and the full +2 OVR available.
  2. The Premier League 85s and 86s (Josh King, Lewis Hall), if they hold a starting spot. Check their league starts on a stats site before you spend.
  3. Gilberto Mora for the cheapest route to PlayStyle+ and 5-star Weak Foot on an 87.

And if you just want the best card right now? Vicky López at 90 and Ngumoha at 89 are already where the 85s are hoping to end up in February. Paying for those is paying for the present, not the promise. Honestly, that's a perfectly good reason.

FAQ: FC 27 Future Stars live upgrades

When do FC 27 Future Stars upgrades start counting?

Tracking started on Friday 9 October 2026. Any league match before that date doesn't count towards Future Stars live upgrades.

When will Future Stars upgrades be added to the cards?

The upgrades are reported to be applied on 3 February 2027, according to FIFPlay, fifauteam and Altchar. EA hasn't published an end date for the tracking window.

Do Champions League or cup goals count for Future Stars upgrades?

No. Only domestic league matches count. Cup, continental and international matches are excluded.

What is the maximum rating a Future Stars card can upgrade to?

87 OVR. Starts give +1 to a maximum of 86 and then +1 to a maximum of 87. Cards already rated 87 or higher get no overall boost from starts.

Which Future Stars Team 1 players get the biggest upgrades?

The five 85-rated cards can each gain +2 OVR: Julian Hall, Josh King, Laura Blindkilde Brown, Jon Martín and Robin Risser. Julian Hall has the easiest path because MLS players need only 2 and 3 starts.

Does a CDM count as an attacker or a defender for Future Stars upgrades?

A defender. CDM cards upgrade through clean sheets, alongside GK, RB, LB and CB. CM, CAM, wingers and strikers upgrade through goals plus assists.

What if a Future Stars card already has 5-star Weak Foot?

It receives 5-star Skill Moves instead. A card that already has a PlayStyle+ receives an extra base PlayStyle instead.

The bottom line

  • FC 27 Future Stars live upgrades run on domestic league form only, from 9 October, with the boosts reported for 3 February 2027.
  • Overall growth stops at 87. The 85s have the most room, and the 87+ cards only have PlayStyle+ and Weak Foot left to earn.
  • Julian Hall is the best upgrade bet in Team 1, thanks to the MLS thresholds. López and Ngumoha are the best cards right now.
