How to Defend in EA FC 27: The AI Won't Tackle For You Anymore
Jockey timing, tackle windows, the press button that does nothing in your own box, and the tactics number quietly costing you goals
Last verified: 21 September 2026 against EA's Gameplay Deep Dive; 89th minute. 2-1 up, their striker gets the ball on the edge of your box and you do what you've done for the last three years. Hold Circle, trust your centre-back, wait for the AI to do its job. It doesn't because it can't anymore.
- AI defenders no longer attempt automatic tackles. In EA's words, they "rely more on their positioning and support the play until you take control and choose when to make a tackle."
- They can still win loose balls, and still win it if a dribbler runs directly into them. They will not nick it off a dribbler for you.
So here's how to defend in EA FC 27, straight: switch to the right defender before the pass lands, hold L2/LT to jockey and cut the lane to goal, and only press Circle/B when the attacker takes a heavy touch. EA confirmed the change in the FC 27 Gameplay Deep Dive. Your defenders will position and block. They will not rescue you. Manual defending isn't the pro option in FC 27. It's the only option.
What Changed In FC 27 Defending, And Why Your Muscle Memory Is Now A Liability
EA didn't tweak defending. They pulled the safety net out from under it. Four changes matter, and they all point the same direction.
| What EA changed | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| AI defenders stopped attempting automatic tackles | You tackle, or nobody does |
| AI defensive reach for interceptions reduced | Passing lanes your AI used to cut now stay open |
| A manually-controlled defender reaches further than an AI one | Switching is now a mechanical advantage |
| Jockey speed and stand-tackle range both increased vs FC 26 | Manual defending got buffed to fill the gap |
Read that third row again, because it's the whole game. EA didn't just nerf AI defending. They made the player you're holding physically better than the ones you aren't. So the same input that worked in FC 26 now produces a different outcome. Holding contain and shepherding the ball carrier towards your centre-backs used to end with someone poking it clear.
Now it ends with a tap-in.
Manual defending isn't the pro option in FC 27. It's the only option.
One thing the other guides bury: this applies to Competitive gameplay only. EA states it outright. Career Mode and offline Squad Battles run different AI tuning. So if you're grinding Squad Battles on Semi-Pro wondering what everyone's complaining about, that's why. Jump into Rivals and it'll hit you in about four minutes. For the wider picture on what shifted this year, our honest review of every new FC 27 feature covers the rest of the rebalance.
Every FC 27 Defending Control (And The Three That Actually Matter)
1. Switch Right stick
Manual flick, not L1/LB. You pick the body, not the game.
2. Jockey L2 / LT
Your default state near the ball. Held, not tapped.
3. Stand tackle Circle / B
Pressed once, when the ball leaves his foot.
Bindings are customisable, so check your controller settings. The defaults on the FC 27 controls reference and FIFPlay's control list look like this.
| Action | PlayStation | Xbox |
|---|---|---|
| Switch to closest player | L1 | LB |
| Manual switch | Right stick flick | Right stick flick |
| Icon switching | R3 | RS |
| Jockey | Hold L2 | Hold LT |
| Sprint jockey | L2 + R2 | LT + RT |
| Standing tackle | Circle | B |
| Hard tackle | R1 + Circle | RB + B |
| Slide tackle | Square | X |
| Hard slide tackle | R1 + Square | RB + X |
| Teammate Contain | Hold R1 | Hold RB |
| Second man press | Tap R1 | Tap RB |
| Goalkeeper rush | Hold Triangle | Hold Y |
| Manual keeper positioning | L2 + right stick | LT + right stick |
Worth knowing: with Tactical Defending, the game decides contextually whether your tackle press becomes a shoulder-to-shoulder barge or a clean standing tackle. So the same button does different things depending on your angle and momentum. Thirteen inputs. You'll win 90% of your defensive duels with the three in the boxes above. Everything else is situational, and two of them will lose you games if you lean on them.
How To Jockey In FC 27 Without Getting Roasted
Jockeying isn't "hold L2 near the ball." That's how you get dragged into the channel and watch a cutback go past you. Jockeying is a shape. You stand between the attacker and the most dangerous thing he can do next, side-on, close enough to punish a heavy touch, far enough that a knock-and-go doesn't leave you facing your own net.
Here's the five seconds of a one-on-one, in order.
- Before the pass lands — switch
Right stick flick to the defender who'll face him. Not after the ball arrives. Before.
- Seconds 1–2 — sprint to close
Eat the empty grass fast. This is the only part of the duel where sprint belongs.
- Two yards out — release sprint
The single most missed input in FC 27 defending. Carry sprint into the duel and your momentum becomes his best friend.
- Seconds 3–4 — jockey and steer
Side-on, holding L2/LT. You're not trying to win it. You're making him take the worst option available: wide, weak foot, or backwards.
- Second 5 — the heavy touch
Ball leaves his foot. Circle/B. If it never leaves his foot, you never press it, and that's a win too.
Sprint jockey (L2+R2 / LT+RT) is for tracking a runner in a foot race down the wing, not the one-on-one itself. Hold it into a duel and he stops while you carry on into the advertising boards.
On PlayStyles: EA increased jockey sprint acceleration for players without the Jockey PlayStyle, and reduced the exit-jockey boost for both the PlayStyle and PlayStyle+ versions. The gap closed from both ends, so a normal defender jockeys better than he used to. And when you plant yourself in front of him and nothing happens for four seconds? That's not a stalemate. That's you winning.
When Should You Actually Tackle In EA FC 27?
Tackle when the ball leaves the attacker's body, not when the attacker is near you. Those are different moments, and confusing them is the most common way to concede in FC 27.
Green light Press it
He takes a heavy touch.
The ball drifts off his foot.
He turns into you.
He commits to one direction and can't change.
You've matched his run and can come from the front or side.
Red light Don't
He's simply near you.
The ball is glued to his foot.
He's facing you square with options either side.
You're behind him.
You're the last defender and it isn't certain.
Stand-tackle range got longer this year, which is a gift and a trap. You can reach from further out, so people press Circle from distances that used to be obviously silly and get away with it just often enough to keep doing it.
Slide tackles are a last resort. Not a "he's getting away" resort, a "this is a goal otherwise" resort. Miss one and you've removed a defender for four seconds, which in a 2v2 is the entire game. The uncomfortable truth underneath all of this: sometimes the correct defensive action is no action. Stand him up, block the lane, let him make the mistake.
You don't have to win the ball. You have to stop the goal.
Teammate Contain And Team Press: What They Really Do Now
Teammate Contain (hold R1/RB) is a delay tool in FC 27, not a ball-winning tool. EA confirms AI teammates now mark the ball carrier from a slightly longer distance than before, so your teammate shadows the dribbler and buys you a second. He won't go and get it.
Use Contain as half a move, never the whole move.
Hold R1/RB so a teammate occupies the ball carrier. Use your controlled player to cover the pass he wants to make.
Then, once you've read his intent, switch onto the containing defender and apply the real pressure yourself.
Contain buys time. You spend it.
Team Press is the one that catches people out. The community read, and it matches how the tool is built, is that it's for squeezing higher up the pitch rather than rescuing your own box. Hammering it as an emergency box-defence button mostly drains stamina. EA's notes don't cover Team Press behaviour directly, so treat that as experience rather than documentation.
The FC 27 Defensive Tactics Layer Nobody Talks About
You can be perfect on the sticks and still concede four, because your defensive approach is sending your back line to the halfway line every time you lose the ball.
FC 27 gives you four defensive approaches, and the numbers behind them matter more than people realise.
| Approach | Line height | Run tracking | Pressure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deep | 1–30 (default 25) | Drops with runs | None |
| Balanced | 31–60 (default 50) | Flexible | None |
| High | 61–90 (default 70) | Rarely tracks | Minimal |
| Aggressive | 91–100 (default 95) | Doesn't track | After loss, extra stamina |
Run tracking is the hidden stat. Deep drops with runners. Aggressive ignores them completely and dares you to catch up. So if you're getting slaughtered by through balls and pace merchants in behind, the fix probably isn't your defending. It's that you're sat on Aggressive at 95 because a tactics video told you to, and every ball over the top is a free one-on-one. Drop to Balanced around 45 to 50 and half those goals disappear and if you're conceding to patient build-up and cutbacks instead, going deeper won't save you. You're inviting them in. That's the opposite fix.
Roles and Focuses also shape how individual defenders step and cover, so check your fullbacks aren't set to bomb forward while you're trying to sit in.
Defending Crosses, Cutbacks And Set Pieces In FC 27
The three situations that decide close games, and the three nobody writes about.
Crosses
Switch to the far-post defender, not the one nearest the ball. It's going to the back stick. It always is.
Height, Jumping and the Aerial PlayStyle decide the duel, so know which centre-back actually wins headers before the ball's in the air.
Cutbacks
Stop sprinting at the wide man. Sprinting opens the exact lane he wants.
Block the inside pass and let him cross from a bad angle. Force the difficult ball, don't create the easy one.
Corners and free kicks
Take manual keeper control (L2 / LT + right stick) only if you're confident. A badly timed keeper step is worse than none.
Otherwise leave him and pick the best header in your box.
Most conceded corners in FC 27 come from switching in a panic at the last second and leaving a runner completely free. Pick your man early and stay on him. One-on-one with your keeper: hold Triangle/Y to rush, but release early if the attacker takes a touch around him. Holding it all the way through is how you gift penalties.
Do You Need Expensive Defenders To Defend In FC 27?
No. You need the right PlayStyles and the right positioning, not an 89-rated centre-back. FC 27's rebalance rewards what you do with the sticks far more than two extra points of Defensive Awareness.
Centre-backs: Defensive Awareness, Interceptions, Standing Tackle, Strength, Reactions.
Fullbacks: Pace, Stamina, Sliding Tackle.
The PlayStyles that change behaviour without you touching a button: Block, Intercept, Jockey and Anticipate.
A high Interceptions attribute helps even without the PlayStyle. The PlayStyle stacks on top.
Checking the best PlayStyles by role before you spend is worth ten minutes of your life. Where it does get expensive is the midfield screen in front of them, because a proper CDM stops more goals than any centre-back upgrade. If you're building that midfield and your coin balance says otherwise, you can top up your FC 27 coins rather than grinding another sixty Rivals games for fodder.

Diagnose The Goals You Keep Conceding
Stop practising defending in general. Practise the goal you actually keep conceding. Save your replays for one Rivals session, watch them back, then find your symptom below.
I keep conceding through balls in behind
Your line is too high and it isn't tracking runs. High rarely tracks and Aggressive doesn't track at all, so every ball over the top becomes a one-on-one. Drop to Balanced with line height around 45 to 50 and most of these stop.
I keep conceding cutbacks across the six-yard box
You're sprinting at the wide man, which opens the exact lane he wants. Block the inside pass instead and let him cross from a bad angle. Force the difficult ball rather than creating the easy one.
They keep skilling past my centre-back
You switched to the centre-back too early. Stay on the midfielder, delay the attacker further from goal, and only switch to your centre-back once the attack is committed to a direction.
I keep conceding far-post headers
You're switching to the defender nearest the ball. Switch to the far-post defender instead, before the cross is played, and check which of your centre-backs actually wins headers.
I keep conceding long shots from the edge of the box
Nobody is stepping to the ball. Tap R1/RB for a second man press to close the shooter while you hold your shape, rather than leaving him a clean yard to set his feet.
I keep giving away penalties from slide tackles
You're using slide as a first option rather than a last one. Jockey instead and wait for the heavy touch. Slide only when the alternative is a certain goal.
I get countered every time I press
You're using Team Press inside your own third, where it does little beyond draining stamina. Press higher up the pitch when you want to squeeze their build-up, and defend your box with shape and switching instead.
The 20-Minute Practice Loop
Twenty minutes in the FC 27 Training Centre doing nothing but jockey and tackle timing will do more for your rank than another Weekend League run of learning the same lesson the expensive way.
- 5 minutes — jockey only
No tackle button at all. Just hold L2/LT and stay side-on. Learn what "close enough" feels like without the safety of a press.
- 5 minutes — release-sprint reps
Sprint in, drop sprint two yards out, settle into jockey. Repeat until the release happens without you thinking about it.
- 5 minutes — tackle windows
Now add Circle/B, but only on a visible heavy touch. Count your misses. If you're pressing on contact rather than on the touch, you'll see it immediately.
- 5 minutes — switching under pressure
Right stick only. Never L1/LB. Practise picking the far-post man and the covering midfielder rather than whoever the game hands you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you defend in EA FC 27?
Switch to the right defender before the pass arrives, hold L2 or LT to jockey and stay between the attacker and goal, and press Circle or B only when the ball leaves his foot. AI defenders no longer attempt automatic tackles in Competitive gameplay, so the tackle has to come from you.
Did EA really remove AI tackling in FC 27?
In Competitive gameplay, yes. EA's Gameplay Deep Dive states AI defenders now rely on positioning and support the play until you take control and choose when to tackle. They can still win loose balls or win it when a dribbler runs directly into them. Career Mode and offline Squad Battles use different AI tuning.
What button is jockey in FC 27?
Hold L2 on PlayStation or LT on Xbox. Sprint jockey is L2 plus R2, or LT plus RT, and should be used to track a runner rather than inside a one-on-one duel.
Is jockeying better in FC 27 than FC 26?
Yes. EA increased jockey speed for manually-controlled defenders compared to FC 26, and also increased the range of manually-triggered standing tackles. Jockey sprint acceleration was raised for players without the Jockey PlayStyle, while the exit-jockey boost was reduced for PlayStyle and PlayStyle+ holders.
What is the best defensive line height in FC 27?
For most players, Balanced with a line height around 45 to 50. High rarely tracks runs and Aggressive doesn't track them at all, which is why through balls punish those settings. Deep drops with runs but invites patient build-up and cutbacks.
Do you need expensive defenders in FC 27?
No. Positioning and PlayStyles matter more than overall rating. Prioritise Defensive Awareness, Interceptions, Standing Tackle, Strength and Reactions, plus the Block, Intercept, Jockey and Anticipate PlayStyles, ahead of paying for a higher-rated card.
Why does Team Press not work in my own box?
Team Press is built for squeezing opponents higher up the pitch, not rescuing your defensive third, and using it there mostly drains stamina. EA's notes don't document Team Press behaviour directly, so treat this as community experience rather than confirmed design.
